10 Oct 2008 : Francis and Hurton make it a double swoop at the awards!
Francis and Hurton make it a double swoop at the awards!Gwyn Francis and Gareth Hurton made it a night to remember as both picked up batsman of the year and player of the year for the 1st and 2nds respectively. Gwyn's consistency through out the season and his 115 n.o. against Pontllanfraith was a big factor in him picking up the award. The same has to be said with Gareth also. Commanding performance with the bat saw the seconds only just miss out on promotion.
Jonno Edwards picked up 1st team bowler while Phillip Thomas scooped the award for the 2nds.
Young Player of the Year went to Ben Griffiths. His skill and leadership with the bat shows why it won't be long before he's a regular in the first team.
The Ray Davies Memorial Award was presented to Gareth Edwards for his efforts on and off the field. His hard work in arranging the tour and his and his constant work rate behind the scenes ensures the club keeps going from strength to strength.
On a lighter note, this years champagne moment went to Liam Jones for his one handed diving catch against Dinas Powys while the prestigious Most Ducks award was presented to Adam Bowen.
A big thank you must also go out to Gareth Francis who done a superb job as MC on the night, Kath and Sharon for all the food throughout the season and everyone at the Biz for their continued hospitality.

2. Matters Arising

Admin Roles

Chairman – Gareth Hurton expressed interest to carry on with the job on a full time basis. It was deemed necessary that the club should have a strong Chairman.

Gareth Hurton nominated by Phil Thomas as Chairman and seconded by Barry John.
Agreed that new Christchurch CC Chairman was Gareth Hurton.

Secretary – Ross Edwards to carry on (No other nominees)

Treasurer – Peter Morgans to carry on (No other nominees)

Child Welfare Officer – Phil Thomas highlighted the importance of having on board a Child Welfare Officer in accordance with ECB and the Welsh Club Cricket Conference directives. At present, the club had not had one, as Ben Edwards - who was originally to take up the post at the start of the year, had left for Miskin Manor.

It was agreed that Phil Thomas would take up the post of Child Welfare Officer.

The Chair also mooted the creation of a new role – Player’s Rep who would sit on committee meetings as a ‘bridge’ between the committee and the rest of the players.

It was agreed that Gareth Edwards would undertake the role of Senior Players Rep.

The Chairman went on to say that the committee should sit regularly for the club to be run properly. This was seen as necessity by everyone.
Agreed that a committee meeting shall, from now on, go ahead at the first Thursday in every month. Next meeting 06/11/08.

Club Captains

After two highly successful seasons in charge, Keith Thomas expressed that he would not be standing for 1st Team Captain.
All present thanked Keith for his commitment and hard work during his tenure as Captain.

Ross Edwards was the only person who expressed an interest in the job.

Agreed that Ross Edwards would take up the position of 1st XI Captain.
He would also carry on with the role of Secretary, with the possibility of Keith Thomas becoming involved if need be.

Phil Thomas and Gareth Francis declared that they would not be standing as 2nd XI Captain(s) for 2009.
Liam Jones was nominated by Gareth Francis as potential candidate as a youthful 2nd XI captain – something that he said that club needed.
Liam Jones accepted the opportunity but stressed that it was vital to receive help on match days from other people.
Agreed that the new 2nd XI captain was Liam Jones.

Keith Thomas also highlighted the need for other people to help the captains on match days like volunteering for umpiring/scoring/Teas etc – as the ‘job’ as captain was difficult enough as it is.
It was agreed that captains would receive all help they need on and prior to match day.

Club Constitution

Anthony Bowen commented that work was underway in completing an official club constitution.
It was agreed that such a thing was needed, and that every player should agree to its content. Such a thing, when completed, would be posted on the website.
ACTION: Anthony Bowen to carry on work with official club constitution. Matter to be discussed further at next committee meeting.

Youth Section

Anthony Bowen commented that the club’s youth set-up continued to go from strength to strength. Currently the club had three ECB qualified coaching assistants – himself, Phil Thomas and Keith Thomas - some of whom, it was hoped would be sitting the next step on the ECB coaching programme in the near future. Liam Jones and Ross Edwards will be sitting the same course in November.
The club’s youth set up, it was mentioned, was also attracting the attention of children from the Rhondda Fawr.
It was recognised that more help was needed in the youth set-up with regards to helping out on junior match days. Anthony Bowen also commented that the club had secured the first part of funding to establish nets at Greenwood Park.

Finances

The treasurer stated that there was approximately £370.00 in the player’s fund. How this was to be spent was entirely up to the players. Matter to be discussed again.
The club had £587.96 in its bank account plus £100.00 in cash.
The treasurer also drew attention to outstanding money owed for the previous season’s membership fees and unpaid merchandise. A figure of in between the region of £300.00 - £400.00 was owed to the club. Everyone present agreed that this was unacceptable and that it was mooted that something would be put in place in the new constitution explaining that players would not be available for selection if they had failed to supply the treasurer with their membership fee.
It was also agreed that the idea of players choosing to pay their membership fee in terms of petrol money was to be scrapped – Everyone was to contribute £30.00 as a membership fee at or before the start of the season and people would thus be reimbursed for petrol money on match days.

Teas

Keith Thomas announced that his wife – Kath would not be preparing Teas on Match Days on a regular basis from now on.
All present thanked Kath in preparing Teas that were always well received.
There was the possibility of the responsibility of preparing Teas being shared on a rota system between players.
ACTION: Tracey Coates would also be asked if she would like to prepare Teas for the Club again.
The matter would be discussed again at the next committee meeting.

Ambition

The Chairman invited comments with regards to the club’s ambition.
Keith Thomas stated that it would perhaps not be too long before the club started to think about setting up a 3rd XI – although not yet. Keith Thomas also stressed that the club not want to ‘stand still’ stating that it should do all that it could to retain the services of its promising young players, and that the only way of doing that was by climbing the league structure. The club had gained an awful lot out of poor season weather wise by the 1st XI gaining promotion to the Welsh Club Cricket Conference division two and were now only one division away from a very good league and playing against major competition such as Hopkinstown etc. Keith Thomas also pointed out that the club’s number one goal should be to play one day in The Thomas Carol Welsh Club Cricket League.

Ross Edwards asked if any money could be set aside for Sightscreens and Covers. Anthony Bowen replied that this could not happen due to the ongoing project with regards to the funding for Nets and that the old sightscreens that were once deployed at Greenwood Park were now kept in a Council Yard.
The idea was brought up that money should be set aside through fundraising to finance Covers and Sightscreens.
ACTION: Matter to be explored at next meeting.

Club Website

The Chairman – Gareth Hurton announced that he would be stepping down from overseeing the club’s website.
It was agreed by all that Michael Stephenson should carry on with the project as he had expertise in website construction.
It was agreed that the makeup of the website should be down to the ideas of the players and may incorporate such things as Club History, Players Profiles and Stats etc.
Action: Michael Stephenson new website co-ordinator. Contents of website to be discussed further at next meeting.

Midweek Cricket League and Sunday Friendlies

It was discussed whether the club should play in the 2009 Pontypridd/Rhondda Midweek Cricket League bearing in mind the number of heavy defeats the club had experienced at the hands of teams such as Pontypridd and Ton Pentre.
It was suggested that the club would be better off playing in a mini series of midweek games against Porth, Gareth Francis commented, as the club had difficulty in putting together a strong enough XI to compete against the likes of Pontypridd and Ton Pentre, especially when the Midweek games clashed with the coaching of the juniors.
ACTION: Porth to be approached over this and matter to be discussed further at following meeting. The possibility of Sunday friendlies to be discussed again.

Kit

The Chairman invited comments on Kit.
It was mentioned that the 1ST XI and 2nd XI kit bags should have a thorough sort through, perhaps at the first net session, identifying anything that the club could replace. However, it was also recognised that most players now had their own kit-bag complete with equipment etc.
ACTION: Matter to be discussed again.

The Chairman thanked everyone for their time and attendance.
